Wine Road
Description
The South Tyrolean Wine Route, one of the oldest in Italy, enchants with its quaint villages of Girlano, San Paolo, San Michele, Caldaro, Termeno, Cortaccia, Magrè, Cortina. It lies through Oltradige and Bassa Atesina to Salorno, on the border of South Tyrol, and combines centuries of wine growing tra-dition with a touch of the mediterranean way of life.
Not only the three autochthonous grape varieties but also around 20 different grape varieties thrive on around 4000 hectares. Stately residences, old cellars, and traditional wine-growing families wit-ness a lively wine culture. The main village, Caldaro, shows the Oltradige architectural style, a symbiosis of late Gothic architecture and Italian Renaissance. The largest and warmest bathing lake in the Alps, Caldaro Lake, is a paradise for swimming, pedal boating, or enjoying a glass of wine from the beginning of May.
