There are many castles in Alto Adige/South Tyrol and many of them can be visited, but this one, although very well known, attracts few visitors, perhaps because it is difficult to reach. In fact, the castle can only be reached on foot along a steep paved path from the Middle Ages in about 30 minutes.
The castle stands on a hill above the village of Ponte Gardena and dominates the Isarco Valley with its imposing bulk. Trostburg Castle is one of the largest fortified complexes in South Tyrol and is famous because the famous minnesinger Oswald von Wolkenstein was born and lived there between 1377 and 1445. The castle can be visited and its interior features a beautiful Gothic stube with a three-lobed vault, late Gothic frescoes and an extensive library.
Of course, the visit requires a walk of about half an hour, but the effort will undoubtedly be compensated by the visit and, if you wish, by a good snack of South Tyrolean products.
