In 1796, during the French invasions, Tirolean Catholics asked for the help of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Since the French invasion initially failed, every first Sunday after the Corpus Domini (middle of June) Bolzano celebrates the divine intervention with a grand procession, which starts from the Duomo and strolls through the streets of the city centre, with marching bands, standards, Schützen companies and the main civil and religious authorities.
